Site Details
A brief history
The site is currently being used an automotive repair shop. In 1958, Merritt Haines bought the property, and the property has operated as Merritt’s Service Station since then. Groundwater contamination was first observed in 1990 during a UST removal. Soil contamination was initially detected in 1993 during an additional UST removal.
Proposed Remediation Plan
The remediation plan for this site includes the placement of magnesium sulfate into the area of excavation during a UST removal. This placement was completed in June 2024. The use of magnesium sulfate is a proven technology used to degrade volatile organic compounds. For petroleum compounds, degradation pathways may be aerobic or anaerobic. Due to on-site lithology, the addition of electron acceptors such as sulfate would be expected to enhance ongoing anaerobic degradation more effectively than agents used to increase oxygen. Groundwater will be sampled six months and one year after the injections are completed to assess the degradation of the compounds.
